Family-to-Family Education Class

This is a comprehensive educational 12 week course offered free to the commmunity.

The Family-to-Family course is designed for family members and friends of loved ones suffering from mental health issues. Family-to-Family is taught one evening a week for 12 consecutive weeks. Class size is kept small for intimacy (class sizes in our community tend to average between 10-12 people and are limited to no more than 25). The course is co-taught by specially trained family members and includes the following topics:

  • Information about Schizophrenia, Major Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Schizoaffective Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Panic Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Coping skills; handling crisis and relapse
  • Listening and communications skills
  • Problem solving and limit setting; rehabilitation
  • Understanding the actual experience of people suffering from mental illness
  • Self-care; learning how to recognize normal emotional reactions within families to chronic worry and stress
  • Basic information about medications and their side effects
  • Information about connecting with appropriate community services and community supports
